Morning Musings
Posted by yogamum under Kids, Personal, Yoga | Tags: Education, snakes, spanish, teaching |I am now completely and totally obsessed with my snake sighting the other day, and I have a post brewing in my head about What It All Means, a post that connects snakes in my backyard, samskaras, yoga, and my internal journey. Doesn’t that sound profound? Unfortunately you are going to have to wait until tomorrow (I hope), as I only have a few minutes to write while I sit here at Panera, using the free wi-fi and drinking a mocha before I head off to teach Spanish to the kiddos.
Teaching Spanish is probably the most fun job I’ve ever had. Sure, it’s tiring to deal with 100+ kids ages 4-14 all in one day but it’s also great to be around all that kid energy. The little ones give me hugs and call me Mrs. Señora and demand to know the word for “poop” in Spanish. A couple of the eighth graders blow me away with their enthusiasm and ambition; they are trying to get as far as they can in the textbook so they can be placed into second-year Spanish when they head off to high school next year. It also helps that my co-teacher is fantastic to work with and lets me do a lot of the fun stuff!
The funny thing is, this is not the sort of job I would ever have sought out. First of all, I would have thought I wasn’t qualified; I don’t have an teaching certificate (FreckleBoy: “MOM! Are you teaching without a LICENSE???”) or a degree in Spanish. Second of all, the one thing I always swore I would never, ever do, was teach kids under the age of 18. But when the opportunity arose and I was asked to do this job, what came into my mind was this: “When you are offered the opportunity to do something you love, something that is in line with some of your strongest values, and to do it with people you respect, the only thing to say is YES.”
And on that note, I’m off to school!

Sounds as if, for now, it’s the absolutely right thing to do!
What’s the word for “snaking mating ball” in Spanish?

Im at a job right now that I never thought I would be at. But so far it’s exactly what I love and I’m so glad I was pushed into it! Sometimes our dreams come true without us even realizing they were our dreams in the first place!

I am looking forward to you musings on what it all means. I am frequently in a mindset where I see connections everywhere I look. And, um — what is the word for poop in Spanish?

Isn’t it amazing when you can reach some children with a new perspective about their own potential? I’m sure your enthusiasm is contagious. Kids are great for showing us what is genuine and what is forced. There is no pulling wool over their eyes, and I think that adults need to experience that once and a while. I now know that no matter what happens professionally, I am going to continue working in schools for many years to come. The teachers and students are so grateful.

As you know, I am working with young children on a regular basis now too. What I am finding is, since my kids are now much older than they, I can sort of sit back and watch the children in the class for who they are. I just observe the things that they do well, the things they find challenging (and try to avoid doing) and those who just go for it. It’s really cool. Having that cute little 4 year old guy sitting in my lap and letting me get my “boy fix” (I have two daughters) is nice too. My hubby says that this must be what keeps teachers teaching since it certainly is not the money. We should all be grateful for that.

Think you’ll be such a great teacher yogamum!
Looking forward to your snake posts too.
btw Chinese myths have snake-human romances… think it’s been put down as Madam White Snake where the lady snake & scholar fall in love but it’s a forbidden union by the laws of heaven…

Yogamum, you are an amazing teacher. The school is lucky to have you. I’m glad you are finding such joy.
I think you have even taught me a few things.
