Three Reasons I Am Never Going Into My Backyard Again
Posted by yogamum under Family, Kids, Personal | Tags: fear, snakes |Yes, that is the sight that greeted me when I looked out my bedroom window yesterday afternoon. Three humongous snakes, all coiled up and hissing (bonus points if you name the song I stole that last phrase from). These dudes were at least three feet long, fat and brown and yellow. They seemed to be fighting amongst themselves (or mating, I have no idea!) and they were hissing and trying to bite each other. I did NOT tell the kids about them because I didn’t want them to freak out, but I will give them a generic “wildlife you may encounter in the backyard” talk at some point.
Two of the snakes eventually detangled themselves and slithered off into the open space that borders our backyard. The one on the right hung out in the yard for a while until I called my neighbor to come scare it away (my husband was at work, lucky guy). I’m pretty brave, but not when it comes to snakes. My neighbor chased the snake with a broom and it totally went into defensive mode, posing in a striking position. But it finally decided to head on off to find its compañeros and maybe gang up on some mice or something.
My neighbor suggested I let my dog out into the yard to scare away the snakes. I said, “You’ve seen my dog, right?”
Does that look like a dog that snakes would fear? I don’t think so.
I wish I could learn to appreciate snakes, but I can’t. I just can’t! I wish they would stay out in nature where they belong. But then, when nature is separated from your backyard by only a wrought-iron fence, you can’t expect the wildlife to respect your boundaries.

Given what Shauna says below, that song is oddly appropriate. YM

This may have been a very small snake “mating ball.” The male snakes emerge from hibernation first in spring and then hang around and wait for a female to emerge, at which point every nearby male comes to court her by tangling up with her. The mating ball disperses once the female chooses a winner. Sometimes there are so many males piled up on a female that she suffocates; this lucky female appears to have had only two suitors.
Oh.My.God. That is so….ick. So when the two snakes slithered off together, maybe that was the female and her chosen suitor? And the one that stayed behind was cranky and bitter, which is why he wanted to bite my neighbor? YM

Eeeeew. I’m impressed you had the presence of mind to get the camera, though!
Well, I was safely ensconced about 10 feet above the snakes on my deck. But I was still terrified! YM

Also Very Scared of Snakes. It’s mostly the leglessness, but also the potential bitiness. Thanks for photographing them, though, for our benefit.

OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD
Can you tell I’m petrified of snakes too? What Shauna said is the first thing I thought of when I saw the pictures — those snakes are going at it! I’ve always been afraid of snakes, just like my mother and my grandmother. I can hardly bear to see them on TV. I’m an excellent snake spotter though. I’m always on the lookout for them when I’m outside so I normally will see them before anybody else does. EEEEW EEEEW EEEEW

Yeah! I love it that you went and got the camera too. You are a Cool Mama!
As much as I’m freaked out here - have you noticed if they are poisonous? Are the heads triangular or rounder/oval?
Did you hide the hamster?
Sorry, but there is a part of me that’s hopping up and down like a teenager, going, “Woo hoo!”
Sorry. ;p

my friend Wendy found a bear in her backyard. i am not sure what is worse. the bear can’t really sneak up on you like snakes can. YIPES!!!!
your dog is about the cutest thing i have ever seen!

Gosh, can’t some snakes mate in the privacy of a public blog! Imagine what snakes say if they saw our courting rituals.
The funny thing about snakes is they will always try to get away without hurting you, and only attack if others attack first. Just throw some water on them the next time from a far.

Scary, wouldnt want to meet them snakes while taking the trash out first thing in the morning. Are they poisonous?
We just get Hedgehogs in our garden!
May 7, 2008 at 7:26 am
These snakes are not poisonous. I believe they are Western terrestrial garter snakes (I looked it up!). It would probably hurt if they bit you, but you wouldn’t die.
Next time I will try throwing water. That didn’t even occur to me!
I would rather have hedgehogs!
(Actually I just found another photo online and I think they might have been bull snakes.)

Sorry, I’m of the few ‘jump up and down and say whoo hooo! cool!’ gang. That is, as long as they are not poisonous. I love to see all things natural (outside my house). Spiders on the other hand….

Oh man, I knew that REO speedwagon song. I want 50 yogamum points, too!
You were watching snake porn. Hee hee. I bet they were bull snakes. Where they really thick? I had one slither past me at the park one day. Scared the crap outta me. I appreciate snakes, from a FAR distance. I probably would have made Kurt come home from work or something.

Yikes. I appreciate nature - from a distance. I would never go outside ever again.

Okay…Keep your snakes up there please! We had some foxes in our neighborhood the other day…which I think is lovely but my little Bubba has a totally irrational fear of them…that darn Swiper (Dora the Explorer’s nemesis)

I am petrified of snakes, I would have lost my mind if I looked out the window and saw that terrifying sight. I would totally being throwing things (rocks, books, etc, hee hee) into the yard to scare anything off before I went out

Beautiful snakes! But then I have no fear of them, just a healthy respect. You were actually quite priviledged to see the mating ritual. Blessings.

Cool - snake nooky! I like snakes. I had garter snakes as pets when I was a teenager and early 20s. Unfortunately, you and my DH share a similar feeling towards them, so no more snakes for me.
May 7, 2008 at 11:21 am
I agree with Amy. They look too big to be garter snakes. I can’t see the markings very well from the pictures, but considering where you live, I bet they’re gopher snakes - also known as bull snakes.
I bet you never knew I used to volunteer at the zoo and regularly carried around snakes just like these to show people and let them pet them. I once caught a gopher snake and tried to keep it for a pet, but my mom made me release it. Boohoo.
P.S. They bite (of course) but they’re actually constrictors so they strangle their food instead of poisoning it. Very useful for keeping down the rodent population in the neighborhood/backyard.

I kinda was wondering if it was a lovefest…I don’t know that much about snakes, though!
Cool action shots, Yogamum!
May 7, 2008 at 12:32 pm
That’s awesome! I’ve never seen snakes do that. You’re so lucky!
Even if you have no fear of snakes, it’s best to avoid handling them. Last summer, I picked up a garter snake that had slithered onto a busy road. It left a sticky, smelly residue in my hand, that was really hard to wash away. It wasn’t the reward I had in mind when I tried to help the little guy. Also, salmonella infection/poisoning is not uncommon for folks that fail to adequately wash their hands after handling reptiles.

No recipe for snake?

wow, that must stink, having snakes in your backyard!!!!
… *random* i get stinkbugs at my house ALL the time. thing is, not only are they outside, they also come INSIDE.
i don’t like stinkbugs.
be thankful the snakes stay OUTSIDE.

I think snakes are pretty cool. I would love to see one in my backyard, as long as it doesn’t bite me!
May 8, 2008 at 9:37 pm
That is just disgusting. Yuck and eeeeuw. Nice photos, considering the subject matter.
We have foxes in our neighborhood. I way, way prefer foxes. (You probably have foxes, too, since you have other wildlife around.)
